Poker Stars to sue Erick Lindgren for $2.5 million
Amaya's Rational Group, the owners of both PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker, is suing American Poker Pro Erick Lindgren in a Nevada federal court for $2.5 million.
Lindgren is one of the top thirty biggest poker earners of all time, winning two World Series of Poker bracelets, and two World Poker Tour titles. However, since Black Friday in April 2011 which cost Lindgren his monthly salary from Full Tilt Poker, the former poker pro has fallen on hard times due to gambling addiction.
Despite his current financial problems, Lindgren has amassed almost $10 million in live tournament earnings. The money The Rational Group is attempting to retrieve includes an erroneous $2 million Full Tilt Poker managed to wire into Lindgren's bank account in April, 2011 - three days after Black Friday temporary shut down both PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker.
The other $5 million comes from a loan which Full Tilt Poker advanced Lindgren around the same time.
Once regarded as one of the hottest players in the world, Lindgren filed for bankruptcy in 2012 with personal debts of almost $4.8 million, and a further $3.8 million he owed to the IRS. The bankruptcy court would not however discharge the money that Lindgren owned to PokerStars. He also checked into a rehab facility in Newport Beach, California in an effort to beat his gambling addiction.
Lindgren once revealled that at one time his gambling debts were as high as $10 million.
After filing for bankruptcy, Lindgren resumed his pro poker career with a fair degree of success, winning his second WSOP bracelet in 2013 along with $1.3 million, plus another $153,000 in 2014.
PokerStars have repeatedly asked Lindgren to pay back the $2.5 million owed to them, but the world's leading poker room say that Lindgren is not responding to their communications, hence their need to litigate.
